A contemporary book-club romantic comedy
The plan was simple. Go to work, stay out of trouble, repeat.
But then—well, then Pat happened.
JAKE knows falling in love with PAT is a bad idea. Just how bad he could never have guessed. Pat is pregnant, heartbroken, ridiculously smart, and good at losing people, gritting her teeth, and moving on. Jake is good at—nothing, really. But when Pat is diagnosed with an aggressive form of hereditary breast cancer he will have to step up to become a backbone for Pat and a father to a baby he never asked for.
And no matter how daunting the task might be to juggle his odd jobs, the tyrannical little goblin he calls his daughter, and a never-ending list of medical appointments, surgeries, and treatments, he is determined, for once in his life, to get it right.
But Pat, trapped in a body she no longer recognises and haunted by the fear of being abandoned yet again, pushes him away. Ashamed of his ever-growing list of failures, Jake seeks comfort at the pub, his drinking spiralling to a serious problem that in time will compel Pat to confront him and admit how vulnerable she really is.
Little by little they piece their life back together, but the shadow of DIEGO, the baby’s biological father, and a recurrence of Pat’s cancer will shatter the new normal they have worked so hard to build, forcing Jake to face up to the pain and poignancy of the last months of her life.
